Alien invasion stories are nothing new. HG Wells pretty much started the ball rolling with War of the Worlds, which has seen itself on the big screen in several different incarnations.
In recent times we've had Aliens fighting Predators, in Aliens Vs. Predator (and the sequels), and also aliens fighting vikings in Outland.
However 2011 offers us two (at least, maybe more) great twists on the old "Aliens invade our world and are stopped by..." story.
First of all we have the alien scum being stopped by James Bond and Han Solo. As cowboys. In "Cowboys & Aliens", Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig lead the posse as Aliens try to invade in the 1800's.
Next those little extra-terrestrial bastards try to invade modern day inner city London, and are stopped by Nick Frost and a gang of hoodies, in "Attack the Block".
The pedigree of both these films is rock solid too. Ok, 'Cowboys' is bigger budget, but it's directed by Jon Favreau (of Iron Man fame), and written/produced by my favourite (current) team of Alex Jurtzman and Robert Orci (writers/producers of TV shows Xena, Alias, Fringe and Hawaii Five-0 and films Transformers 1+2 and Star Trek (2008) (amongst many other things)).
'Attack; is written by Joe Cornish; a name that may not sound too familiar, unless you remember a late night Channel 4 show called "The Adam and Joe Show" (which featured them doing re-enactments of films using toys). Nick Frost of course is ever reliable.
Seriously, this whole genre is just starting and I'm sure there are hundreds of time frames we can have Aliens trying to invade and being stopped.
I bet it won't be long before Sy-Fy bring us "Tiffany vs the Aliens", where ex teenage pop idol Tiffany has to fight off alien invaders. Wearing only a thong.
